In many modern new build houses the size of the rooms is often minimised at the design stage to allow more houses to be built on a plot of land. This results in some properties having a small kitchen which does not have a seating area. If there are young children in the family this may be a problem because eating in the living area is not always ideal especially if it is carpeted.
If you are faced with this issue it may be possible to remove walls between the kitchen and living room to make one large open plan area, a popular choice in recent times. It is sensible to get an expert’s opinion to see is this is feasible and whether any beams will need to be added to support walls above and if planning approval will be needed.
The option of removing a wall may not be possible in the property so it could be that you may need to consider losing some cupboard space and fitting a breakfast bar with stools to one of the walls. This could be hinged so that it could be folded away when not in use giving more room in the kitchen at other times. Free-standing styles are also available and could be slotted in along any suitable wall.
